Astana Pro Team (AST)
Miguél Angel Lopez from the Astana Pro team (AST) was last year’s general classification winner. At only 23, the Colombian’s success at Tour de Suisse was his best showing to date. This general classification victory is all the more impressive considering the rainy weather and difficult course. Unfortunately, Lopez didn’t manage to take the hourglass-shaped TdS trophy back home with him to Columbia in one piece. He tweeted pictures of a broken trophy, which appears to have been damaged in the cargo compartment during the flight home.
Of all of the Astana racers who took part in last year’s Tour de Suisse, Michele Scarponi of Italy and Laurens de Vreese of Belgium are the only other racers along with Lopez to stay on the Kazakh team this year. In a tragic training accident with a lorry, Scarponi died on 22 April 2017. However, it’s still possible that Alexey Lutsenko (Kazakhstan) will race again in 2017. In 2015, he was the winner of the penultimate stage in Bern.
In the Kazakh language, Astana means capital city. The Astana Pro team uniform features the bold Kazakh national colours of light blue with yellow stripes on the arms.
