Grenchen is unashamedly considered to be the cycling capital of Switzerland. With the Tour de Suisse visiting the canton of Solothurn on 14-15 June 2022 this claim is reinforced.

Cycling is the Focus

The Tour de Suisse visit to Grenchen mid-June brings cycling at its highest level to the home of the National Cycling Federation, Swiss Cycling. «We are very pleased that Grenchen is hosting the Tour de Suisse. Grenchen has become the home of Swiss Cycling, and the Tour de Suisse in turn is the biggest cycling event in Switzerland. It’s a perfect match,» says Thomas Peter, CEO of Swiss Cycling. In addition to the highest governing body in Swiss cycling, Grenchen is also home to the Tissot Velodrome, the fastest 250-metre track in Europe. Last year’s stage winner at the Tour de Suisse, Stefan Küng, celebrated his European title in the individual pursuit at this site in 2015. Can Küng also win the stage to Grenchen next June? Grenchen OC President Alex Kaufmann is delighted about the arrival of the Tour de Suisse: «After the European Track Championships in 2021, the sport-loving population will once again have the pleasure of experiencing a sporting event of international importance on site.» It remains to be seen whether Küng will provide the people of Grenchen with another treat.

Grenchen – Running like Clockwork

As a Start and Finish venue of the Tour de Suisse 2022, however, the Grenchen region has much more to offer. Precision and quality of life. Grenchen, the town at the southern foot of the Jura, stands out for its innovation, culture and sport. Surrounded by the River Aare and the Grenchenberg, the town is a perfect recreation area for leisure activities. More than 50 sports can be enjoyed within cycling distance from Grenchen – from swimming on the Aare to cycling in the bike park. «With the special appearance of the Tour de Suisse, Grenchen has the unique opportunity to present and promote itself as a cycling city», says Alex Kaufmann. The OC President continues: «During these two days in June, residents will have the opportunity to watch the action live in their neighbourhood. It will be a sporting and social experience for people of all ages».

The town of Grenchen and the entire region can look forward to a cycling festival in a class of its own. More information on the exact route will be available in March.
