The fifth stage of the 85th edition will lead from Ambrì to Novazzano.
The Tour de Suisse is looking forward to a complete stage in the Italian-speaking part of the country.
The fifth stage will start in Ambrì in front of the new ice hockey stadium, lead through the Leventina to Bellinzona, from there over Mt. Ceneri to Lugano and Mendrisio.
In the Mendrisio region there will be a circuit before the riders duel for victory in Novazzano.
It is not the first time that Ambrì has hosted the Tour de Suisse. One could even speak of a “regular guest”, as the Tour de Suisse has already been a guest in 2002 (arrival), 2006 (start and finish), 2008 (start), 2013 (prologue and first stage) and most recently in 2015 with a Ticino stage from Ambrì airfield to Olivone.
As in previous editions, the local committee is planning a series of side events before, during and after the start in Ambrì.
Mendrisio has been in the fond memories of cycling enthusiasts at least since the 2009 World Championships, when Fabian Cancellara and Cadel Evans were crownd as new world champions.
The newly founded “Associazione TdS22 Novazzano”, chaired by Giorgio Montorfano and with the technical support of Andrea Bellati, is already working on the route.
“We want to bring out the best qualities of the riders and make them fight for the stage victory on the most famous roads of the region and ensure a cycling spectacle here in Ticino,” explains Giorgio Montorfano.
The fifth stage, which will start on 16 June 2022, falls on the official Ticino holiday of Corpus Christi – so you can expect a Ticino cycling festival.
