The professional cyclists on the Tour de Suisse have the privilege of being able to concentrate fully on the race, thanks to roads closed to the Tour. The risk of being involved in an accident by other road users is already eliminated on the stages. Nevertheless, there are times on the race track when a peloton crashes. The helmet is – apart from the racing bike for the way to the podium – the most important equipment for the riders in terms of safety. This is where Team Trek Segafredo relies on the latest helmet technology from Bontrager: WaveCel.
But not only racing bike pros are exposed to a certain risk in racing and training, also all passionate recreational racing cyclists are not always immune from accidents. To be able to live out your passion for cycling as safely as possible, small but effective measures are enough. Starting with being seen. With the Be Seen campaign, Trek is promoting a simple measure for increased safety: daytime running lights. They make racing cyclists visible to other road users from afar. But the most important measure is to protect his head.
Trek and Trek’s accessories and apparel brand Bontrager have just introduced a breakthrough new helmet technology called WaveCel that is up to 48 times more effective at preventing concussions in typical bike crashes than a traditional EPS foam helmet.
WaveCel is a compressible cellular material on the inside of Bontrager WaveCel helmets. Conventional foam helmets provide protection in the event of a vertical impact, without any rotational movement. WaveCel, on the other hand, takes into account the way most bicycle accidents actually happen – ungracefully, with twisting movements and a diagonal impact.
WaveCel can absorb the impact energy in many ways. On impact, the layers of WaveCel material move independently and can deform until the cell walls are completely compressed, then move laterally and actively absorb the direct impact and rotational energy and dissipate it from the head.
This three-step change in material structure – bending, compressing, sliding – is incredibly effective in distributing impact energy. In almost 99 out of 100 cases, WaveCel can prevent concussion in typical bicycle accidents. WaveCel technology is available in four different Bontrager helmet models at retail stores, including model XXX-the new Team Trek Segafredo helmet.
