A crazy race from North to South under the beloved slogan “Ticino land of cycling”.
Novazzano and the entire Mendrisiotto Region, known as the “Tuscany of Switzerland”, will be the arrival site of the 5th stage of the Tour de Suisse 2022. But differently than the gentle hills of Tuscany, here riders will be confronted with the roughness of the climbs, almost never below 9% and with peaks up to 16%. The last route section, a circuit, must be covered three times by the riders before they reach the finish Line in Novazzano. present a lot of ups and downs and many interesting places for publics to spot the best riders in the race. Mendrisiotto Region preserves a huge amount of memories tied to Cycling … hosted two World Championship in 1971 and 2009, many stages of the Tour de Suisse, Tour de Romandie, Giro d’Italia and the classic Giro di Lombardia, as well as dozens of other professional, amateur and kids races. It’s final circuit with exhausting and unforgettable climbs like the legendary ascent of the Torraccia (Novazzano), stage of the big battle between Eddy Merckx and Felice Gimondi back in ’71 or again between our Fabian Cancellara and the “ticinese from Australia” Cadel Evans in 2009. Now, again, Novazzano and all of Ticino (the start will be lead in Quinto – Leventina, and the race go down to Biasca – Bellinzona and coast the Ceresio Lake from Lugano to Mendrisio) can’t wait for such amazing battles, sure that also this time amazing stories will be written in the Great Cycling book.
