Team Sunweb (SUN)
The team racing with a German license, Giant-Alpecin, became Team Sunweb in 2017. Naming sponsor Sunweb is an online travel agent.
Sunweb’s team leader, Tom Dumoulin ist not only this year's well deserved Giro-winner. He was the winner of the prologue and the final individual time trial in the Tour de Suisse 2015 as well as the proud wearer of the leader jersey for three days. While he skipped the Swiss tour last year, we are happy to welcome him again this year.
After breaking his pelvis at Tour de Romandie end of April, Warren Barguil will not take part at the Tour de Suisse. He had the privilege of putting on the leader’s jersey at the Rettenbach glacier. But just a day later, in the individual time trials in Davos, he had to hand it over to Miguél Angel Lopez (Astana), who later became the overall winner.
Sprinter and classics specialist John Degenkolb left the team this season and is now racing for Trek-Segafredo. Team Sunweb replaced him with 26-year-old Michael ‘Bling’ Matthews of Australia. Matthews, who was the sprint winner of the fourth stage two years ago for ORICA in Schwarzenbach (St. Gallen), never quite found his stride during the Tour de Suisse 2016, hovering consistently around 10th in the sprint rankings. It’s quite possible that the Australian racer’s switch from ORICA to Sunweb will put some new wind in his sails.
