The Rhine originates at Stein am Rhein at the western end of Lake Constance. The old town of Stein am Rhein is known for its beautifully preserved medieval half-timbered houses with painted façades. On the banks of the Rhine is the St. Georgen Monastery, a former Benedictine abbey. The medieval castle of Hohenklingen, which towers high above the town, was built in 1225.
