The Frenchman prevailed in a sprint from a breakaway group on the 157.7-kilometre circuit around Locarno. Marcel Camprub\u00ed (Pinarello \u2013 Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) finished second, while Bart Lemmen (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) rounded out the podium.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A large lead group of 14 riders formed following a hectic opening phase. Among them were Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious), Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek), Finlay Pickering (Team Jayco AlUla) and the eventual winner Gr\u00e9goire. The peloton initially let the group go, keeping the gap under control. UAE Team Emirates \u2013 XRG took up much of the chasing work for overall leader Tadej Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p>The race tightened up on the closing phase. With two final climbs the lead group fell apart, while Poga\u010dar \u2014 together with Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) and Eulalio \u2014 closed back in on the breakaway. With two kilometres remaining the leaders\u2019 advantage was down to around 13 seconds. Tactical riding in the front group opened up the possibility that they might be caught.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e9goire, however, launched his sprint early enough and held on for the stage win. The Poga\u010dar group reached the Locarno finish line just a few seconds later. The Slovenian successfully defending the yellow jersey and extending his lead in the General Classification. Richard Carapaz is now 2:50 minutes in arrears, with Andrea Bagioli third.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Hirschi (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) was the best-placed Swiss rider in 39th. Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla), Silvan Dillier (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Fabian Weiss (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) played no part in the fight for the day\u2019s victory.
