Bad Ragaz
Stage Overview
Commentary by David Loosli
This year, Stage 3 begins without any easing in: right from start, the St. Luzisteig provides a short but demanding opening climb.
The route then leads through the Principality of Liechtenstein before returning to Switzerland. A longer flat section follows, before the race rises again towards the Appenzellerland.
The decisive obstacle of the day is the Schwägalp. It is here that it will become clear whether the sprinters can hold on – and if not, how much time they will lose.
After the descent towards Altstätten, the route is completely flat all the way to the finish in Bad Ragaz. That means the key point of the stage comes well before the finish. Riders who are dropped therefore have a realistic chance of coming back, provided their teams organise the chase effectively.
That is exactly what makes this stage so intriguing: will the race be decided early, or will it still come down to a sprint? For the sprinters, this is certainly one of the few genuine opportunities for a stage win.
